 Welcome to
an island that is "... too beautiful." No matter the season, Madeline Island,
embraced by the deep waters of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin, is a
magical place - shorelines, both serene and dramatic, quiet, perfumed woodland
trails, abundant wild life, clear, sparkling skies. The pure, clean air over Lake Superior is bracing to breathe, provides brilliant
sunrises and sunsets, and awe-inspiring displays of the night sky. In the
fall the trees put on a spectacular display. And winter has its special
beauty, with a silence so deep you can hear the snowflakes as they touch
the ground. Once the home of the Dakota Sioux and Ojibway, and French and Canadian fur
traders, Madeline Island has a long and colorful history that somehow, even
today, contributes to the magic of the island. Step onto the ferry and you begin a journey into another world-free of the
stress of today's "rat race" lifestyle. You can feel the tension drain from
your body as the shore of the mainland recedes behind you and the ferry
heads for "the jewel of the Apostle Islands." Birchwood is a home nestled in acres of
forest, yet within walking distance of the waters of Lake Superior. It is a unique, multisided structure, with spacious, vaulted ceilings
and generous views of the surrounding forests. It has a fully equipped
kitchen, an outdoor shower, and a patio that allows you to enjoy outdoor cooking
and conversation.

 Madeline
Island is located two miles off the coast of Northern Wisconsin in
Lake Superior, about 1 1/2 hours east of Duluth, and 7 hours from
Milwaukee. Access to the island varies. From April through January
a 20 minute ferry ride-an adventure in itself-takes you from Bayfield
to the quaint town of La Pointe. Winter affords the opportunity to
ride a wind sled or drive across the six-lane ice road. |
